Our European friends, introduced the ‘old fashioned’ or ‘rocks’ glass – but then we invented ice. (OK, it was more ‘we discovered ice as an essential supplement to the enjoyment of beverage consumption') This required a larger glass, hence the ‘double’ old fashioned. This version, beloved of real men everywhere who have never understood why the last name initial is in the middle of the monograms on their shirt cuffs, has a flared shape that fits neatly into those masculine hands.
